The best of northern Tanzania in six days, then a beach-and-culture break on Zanzibar. You start in Tarangire, spend two full days in the Serengeti, sleep on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and finish at Lake Manyara, where you can add a two-hour walking safari. Then you fly to Zanzibar for five nights at the Serena Hotel on the Stone Town waterfront, with the old town, spice farms and boat trips on the doorstep.

Day 1 • Arusha to Tarangire

Tarangire

We pick you up from your Arusha hotel at 8am for the 2.5-hour drive to Tarangire, famous for elephants, baobabs and tree-climbing pythons. Game drive until evening.

Day 2 • Into the Serengeti

Serengeti

A few hours' drive to the Serengeti gate, a picnic lunch and an afternoon game drive across the endless plains, home to a migration of some 1.5 million animals.

Day 3 • Full day in the Serengeti

Serengeti

A whole day of game drives among impala, buffalo, hippo and crocodile, the migrating herds when they're here, and the resident leopard, cheetah and lion.

Lift off at dawn for an hour over the Serengeti, followed by a champagne bush breakfast. From $500 per person.

A last morning on the plains, among kopjes, woodland and more than 500 bird species, from Kori bustards to white-backed vultures. Then drive to a lodge on the Ngorongoro Crater rim.

Visit a Maasai homestead for traditional songs and dancing, beadwork and stories of life alongside the wildlife. $50 per vehicle.
